LIVERPOOL 3 - 3 AC Milan (Liverpool win 3-2 on penalties).
I’m still in shock after this amazing match. What a seat of your pants emotional yo-yo this one was, and I’m not even a Liverpool fan! You’ve got to give Gerrard and the lads nothing but admiration for their Herculean effort. Talk about never say die! Their spirit was amazing and I’m so pleased they brought home the goods. What a fantastic night of celebrations it must be in Liverpool tonight. You know how much it means to the nation as a whole when even the Evertonian blues (the other half of Liverpool) are celebrating their derby rival’s success. I’ve even heard Man U fans singing the praises of the other Reds.
Apparently over 1 MILLION fans lined the parade route to welcome the team home. The latest estimates are that 300,000 people were gathered to greet the Liverpool bus at St George’s, and a further 750,000 people lined the parade route.
Liverpool’s dramatic victory, a penalty shoot-out win over AC Milan after being three goals down, sparked joyous scenes both in Istanbul and back in Britain. And indeed, fans all over the world have been celebrating a famous with little trouble reported and few arrests. It is the Anfield club’s fifth European Cup triumph, a feat that means they get to keep the current trophy.
The only question begging now is will they be allowed to defend their title? Yeah I understand that Everton won’t want to be dropped from the competition in favour of Liverpool, and that UEFA are reluctant to change the rules to accomodate Liverpool part way through the year, but come on! After what will go down in history as one of the best if not the best football cup final, how on earth can they not find a means for Liverpool to defend their title?? How can the holders not be allowed a defence?? Ridiculous. I hope UEFA see sense.

Dead right, a Herculean effort indeed. Spirit, grit, determination : good, old-fashioned British values all. Objectively, Liverpool are due everyone’s admiration.
But I must admit to being a little puzzled (troubled) by what the media tell us is the national reaction, and I’m certainly intrigued by these reports of Evertonians and Mancunians singing and celebrating. A football fan’s feelings and emotions are far from objective and rational, and any true Everton or Man Utd fan would have spent yesterday in a world of pain.
The hatred of the club down the road is what’s made the game great. It’s only people like politicians (who don’t understand the game but pass comment because they want us to think they do) and the media (who told me while I was dressing for work yesterday morning that “everyone’s a Scouser today” - certainly news to me !) who see one club’s victory as a national victory.
Come on everyone, where’s all the barely concealed envy and bitterness ? Let’s see those good old-fashioned British values !
Shaun
Good point Shaun, in 1999 I was gutted when Man Utd won the trophy, I hate the team, the players and everything they stand for yet I had people telling me that I should be pleased that they had won. No! I wore my Bayern Munich top that night and felt drained and empty when the club I despise lifted the Champs league and the treble.
Also Clive Tyldesley wont stop going on about it. Ever. Whether he is commentating on a Man U game or not. he always mentions that game.
Well done to Liverpool though, Milain looked world class in the 1st half, I suppose Liverpool did for 9 minutes in the second. Chelsea will probably win it next year.
All in all a fantastic night for british football…. being a lfc fan myself i watched with delight old big ears returning to one of the most famous arenas in the footballing world…. well done lads
@ Shaun:
I’m only speaking from personal experience. I didn’t read it in the Sun, I heard some Evertonians speaking live from the pub on Radio 5 Live congratulating the Liverpool team.
“1523: Graham Jones, via the 606 messageboards:
We Arsenal fans went through the same thing on Saturday. The difference was it was a good game to watch last night and credit to Liverpool for a great performance.”
And from the same site, even the Queen had time to text one in!..
“1601: The Queen
Congratulations on your remarkable win last night. It was a magnificent achievement which will be remembered for many years both in Liverpool and across the country.”
Let’s not. Isn’t there enough hatred in the world without trying to incite football fans? Especially in what has been documented as a very good spirited game with minimal arrests for trouble. With your musical talents and the platform you have for airing your message to the impressionable musical youth, you should be preaching Make Love Not War! Afterall, in the words of a certain band member’s little boy’s namesake:
“All we are saying is give peace a chance.”
@ Thunderbird:
Just out of interest, and not being a Man U fan myself, what exactly is it you hate about Man U? Their discipline? Their dominance? Their record? Their business acumen? Their global success? Would you turn your nose up at Keane or Scholes or Ferdinand or Rooney or Nistlerooy or Smith or Neville or Giggs if they were moving to your beloved club on a free?? Or is it simply a case as Shaun put it…
?
Milan ARE world class, and they displayed that in the first half. They were in a different league to Liverpool alltogether. That’s what makes Liverpool’s effort and achievement all the more inspiring. Yet no matter how fantastically Milan played in the first half, it will always say Liverpool on the trophy. 6 names under where it says Manchester United :0))
@ Gaz
Would that be THIS LFC fan??
I agree it’s an emotive subject for many a fan, and equally there’s plenty of people out there who couldn’t give a toss, but I for one would rather see the Champions League Trophy in England, or Britain for that matter, than in Italy. Whichever team it may be who capture it.
VIVE LA RAFFALUTION!
Yep, two totally irreconcilable (is there a spellchecker anywhere on here Scott?) viewpoints, I guess. If the cup’s not in Grimsby I don’t care where it is. As long as it’s not in Scunthorpe. (Each seems as likely as the other.) I accept that’s probably at odds with a lot of people, I just wanted to make my point.
(Also, I’ve long accepted that my views on the merits of patriotism in general seem quite far removed from many people’s (that’s another post).)
So let’s leave it there !
I do feel the need to respond to another of your points though :
Come on. All the best bands have had an air of menace, danger or even violence. The Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Iggy Pop, the Stones … even the oft-Newts-mentioned AC/DC. Would you really like to live in a world of Coldplay and Cliff ?
Thanks for the compliment though ;-)
Shaun
So is the Shaun power pc up and running again?
And what’s up with Coldplay?? Or is that for another thread?
Nope - I’m at work right now using the pc here. I literally haven’t had a moment to look at mine yet - I’m in the midst of a mental two weeks of practising and gigging with the covers band as well as preparing for the next step in the life of South Parade (next Friday June 10th @ Spider’s Web). It’s a hard life.
And what’s up with Coldplay?? Or is that for another thread?
